Alicia Cornwell is a contemporary Australian still life artist whose work brings together Australian and exotic flora, vintage objects and domestic histories.
My Practice
My practice centres on oil still life painting, bringing together native Australian flora, exotic flowers, vintage objects and domestic interiors. The works are drawn from the bush, gardens and forests surrounding my studio in the Dandenong Ranges, where nature is both subject and source.
At the heart of the work is an ongoing curiosity about how the spiritual presence of the natural world can be carried into everyday life. I experience the bush as refuge, sanctuary and a kind of church. My paintings repeatedly return to the point where the wild crosses the threshold into the home, becoming part of daily rituals and familiar surroundings.
Built slowly through layers of oil paint, each composition is carefully arranged to create a dialogue between native flora and objects that speak of a European past. Light, structure and detail connect ideas of place, memory, belonging and reverence, while the cross over of natural and domestic elements reflects the layered histories held within the Australian home.
Ultimately, I want the work to create a sense of connection and attentiveness — encouraging a deeper awareness of nature as something present in our lives, rather than separate from them.
